The green hydrogen revolution wasnt supposed to go like this. In September, the climate change and energy minister, Chris Bowen, declared Australia the green hydrogen capital of the world with 50-plus companies on the ground and a pipeline of investments worth $200bn.The nascent industry has been touted as the start of a renewable energy revolution, with more than $8bn in support promised across federal and state governments. But just months on from Bowens announcement, several major proposals are either shelved or in serious doubt, prompting the question: is green hydrogens race over before it began? In New South Wales, Origin Energy backed out of plans for a hydrogen hub in the Hunter Valley. In Queensland, the Crisafulli government withdrew $1bn in financial support from the Central Queensland Hydrogen Project, a large-scale hydrogen production, ammonia and export facility near Gladstone. In South Australia, plans for a hydrogen plant at Whyalla were put on ice as the state go...

South Sudans first vice-president and main opposition leader, Riek Machar, has been placed under house arrest, prompting a warning from the UN that the country is at risk of relapsing into widespread conflict.Machars party said his arrest had in effect collapsed the peace deal that ended the 2013-2018 civil war.In a statement on Facebook, the acting chair of the foreign relations committee of the Sudan Peoples Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO), Reath Muoch Tang, said the defence minister and chief of national security accompanied a convoy of more than 20 heavily armed vehicles, which had forcefully entered Machars residence. There his bodyguards were disarmed and an arrest warrant issued under unclear charges, he said. The UN human rights commission in South Sudan said in a statement that the arrest, alongside escalating armed clashes and reported attacks on civilians, signals a severe unravelling of the peace process and a direct threat to millions of lives.Failur...

Donald Trump has slapped extensive tariffs on all goods imported to the US, a decision that could see prices soar for UK consumers on everyday items. The US president announced on Wednesday the imposition of taxes on imports from every country worldwide, effective immediately as part of his 'Liberation Day' event, with British-imported goods incurring a new 10% charge. Meanwhile, Downing Street has not yet declared any retaliatory tariffs on US products.
