Line 6 StageSource Speakers Help Create Tour of Epic Proportions

2024-12-11 06:53:26| World Wide Pro Audio Directory

CALABASAS, Calif. August 29, 2012 - Gabe Kubanda thinks big. A singer-songwriter by trade, he is constantly working to expand his exposure through creative ideas. In 2011, he was cast in the Rock N Roll Fantasy Camp reality show on VH1 Classics. This year, he co-founded the Epic Proportions Tour, a new concept in promotion. Kubanda and two other unsigned artists, Lost In Atlantis and School Boy Humor, played 15 dates at military bases, high schools and colleges throughout the summer. When planning the tour, the new Line 6 StageSource L3t loudspeakers played a key role. Epic Proportions is a new and different approach to touring. The idea is to get great live bands a lot of exposure without a lot of financial risk, Kubanda says. Instead of getting a dozen or so people to see us in a club, we play free shows for large crowds, often in the thousands. Kids love to hear new bands, and this is a great way to start a buzz, meeting them after the show, getting social media connections. That starts a cyclical process of getting more fans and more industry notice. Everybody gets paid, and it also enables us to partner with some really great charities like The Keep A Breast Foundation, and do some good in this world. Thats what its all about. To be successful, Kubunda needs to keep the Epic Proportions Tour compact and self-contained, making StageSource L3t intelligent speaker systems the ideal choice. I first saw the Line 6 StageScape M20d mixer and StageSource L3t speakers demoed at the NAMM Show this past January, and I was just blown away. I thought they would be great for the tour, says Kubunda. So when the speakers came out, we bought three of themtwo for main PA and one for use as a monitor. They worked out great! Asked why he opted for the L3t, Kubanda points to the self-contained nature of the tour. We cant afford to bring a full-fledged sound engineer with us, so the L3t speakers were a perfect fit for our situation, he notes. First, the sound quality is awesomenice and crisp, with none of the muddiness you get from a lot of regular PA speakers. Then they have different modes for PA and monitors, which is incredibly helpful. Theyre smaller and lighter than a lot of other products, and very durable. And they have plenty of output, so we could play to crowds up to 2,000 with no problem. Kubanda is a big fan of the two-channel onboard mixer and effects contained in each L3t. When its just me playing solo, I play directly into those and have full feedback suppression, acoustic modeling, reverb, EQ and everything else, he says. I love it! Also, when you lay the speaker down, theres an accelerometer inside that converts it from PA mode into a monitor and actually adjusts the frequency response and the output. I thought that was insanely unique and helpful. The summer tour was such a success that Epic Proportions is about to embark on an even more ambitious national tour. People think you cant make money playing free shows, but we have a formula that works, and were always looking for great live acts that want to join us, he says. This fall, well be playing our way across the country on a biodiesel-fueled tour bus, from LA to New York and back, including a stop at the CMJ Festival to network. Epic Proportions became a success by thinking outside the box, and utilizing StageSource speaker systems is a great example of that. In fact, the Epic Proportions Tour is planning to expand its commitment to include a Line 6 StageScape M20d smart mixing system. Ive been a Line 6 fan for years now, says Kubanda. I use their wireless system and their M13 modeling pedal already. The L3t speakers are incredible, and now were looking forward to expanding our system to include the StageScape mixer as well as more speakers, which will give us the full benefit of everything the system can do when it is integrated together. The Line 6 StageSource loudspeakers are designed specifically for musicians like Gabe Kubanda. When youre an artist, tour manager, sound engineer and concert promoter all in one, you need all the help you can get, he explains. I really think StageSource is a revolutionary product line, something that independent artists such as myself have been looking for.

GC Pro Takes Care of AV for Wellsville, Ohios Holy Trinity Parish Churc

2024-12-11 06:53:26| World Wide Pro Audio Directory

GC Pro provides turnkey solution for Holy Trinity Church and calls upon the services of Affiliate Program member Koko Brothers Entertainment to provide the AV systems installation and integration WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CA, August 29, 2012 The AV systems at Holy Trinity Parish Church, in Wellsville, Ohio, needed an upgrade, and Guitar Center Professional (GC Pro), the outside sales division of Guitar Center that focuses on the needs of professional users, knew just what to do. Billy Walker, Senior Account Manager at GC Pros Northeast/Mid-Atlantic office in Wilmington, Delaware, working with regional service provider Koko Brothers Entertainment, outlined a plan to upgrade all of the churchs sound systems, as well as some of the audio and video systems at the affiliated St. Aloysius School. Koko Brothers is a member of GC Pros acclaimed Affiliate Program, which provides approved AV systems integrators as vendors for complex AV integration and installation projects. The project was completed this summer and included systems and products such as the QSC AD-S282H-WH dual 8-inch 2-way speaker enclosure, Crown XTi 4002 power amplifiers, Shure wired and wireless microphones, a Countryman E6DW5l1SL E6 directional earset, BenQ MX717 3D-ready DLP projector, Da-lite matte white screen and PM2425 Pixmate monitor cart. It was really a tune-up and an upgrade, and it was a very smooth project that left their systems in a much better state, says Walker. The churchs sanctuary now has all-new speakers and amplifiers, and the intelligibility of the system has been greatly improved, with new audio zones also added around the churchs interior. The schools gymnasium and cafeteria also received new audio systems, and the BenQ / Dalite projection system is cart-mounted, making it available throughout the school for AV educational and instructional applications. Father Peter Haladej at the church had visited one of our local Guitar Center stores and when they realized that the customer needed design help and larger components, they sent them to GC Pro, Walker explains. We went in there with Koko Brothers Entertainment, evaluated their needs and created a plan that would give them the benefit of a proven installation vendor and access to GC Pros wide inventory and pricing. When you factor all of that in, GC Pro cant be beat. Angelo Kokkinakos, Partner with his brother Lou Kokkinakos in Baltimore-based Koko Brothers Entertainment, which has done a number of projects at houses of worship, restaurants and retirement communities in partnership with GC Pro, says the churchs existing sound system wasnt fulfilling its needs. Thats really one of the great benefits for us and for clients in working with GC Pro, he says. We can take the time to really analyze what needs to be done to make a project fit the particular requirements of each location, and we have access, through GC Pro, to a much greater array of possible solutions. Its never about one-size-fits-all; its always about what works best for each customers needs. And we were able to make a big difference in the sound at the church when we came in, one of the biggest problems the church had that I found was a 12 dB drop in the back of the sanctuary. After the install it is less than a 3 dB drop.

Classic Church Gets Modern Update with Community

2024-12-11 06:53:26| World Wide Pro Audio Directory

Classic Church Gets Modern Update with Community Brigantine NJ, USA: Like most of New Jersey's seaside communities, life on this resort island near Atlantic City is affected by the seasons. In the summer months, the sun seekers and beach lovers help to swell the congregation at St. Thomas the Apostle from 1,000 to more than 3,000 - well beyond what their existing sanctuary can handle. As Bobby Harper, VP of Sales at Egg Harbor-based ACIR Professional explains, the church came up with a creative solution. "It's an older structure, and it has some history, and they didn't want to just tear it down and build something bigger," says Harper. "So they opted to renovate the original building and also build an event center, which could handle the overflow, as well as other functions." The idea of connecting the events center to the sanctuary via audio and video was suggested early on, but a complex digital matrix with touch panels was simply not feasible. "We wanted to create a solution for them that would meet their needs without getting into complex and expensive networking," Harper explains. In the end, a bit of creativity was all it took. Using the seasonal population shifts to their advantage, the project was carried out in two phases. "The first summer, they used the (just-completed) events center as just that - a multi-purpose events center," explains Harper. When fall approached, the event center was pressed into service as temporary sanctuary while the original 1920s-era building was then renovated, expanded, and tied in with the events center via audio and video feeds. "This summer they are finally enjoying it as an expansion space." The new sanctuary presented some challenging acoustics. "The sanctuary is pretty reflective inside," says Harper. "They replaced the carpet with granite and marble, which increased the reverberance." The addition of naves to the left and right of the altar also impacted the room's acoustics. "We decided to go with a distributed system," Harper continues. "We didn't want to energize the space with a large system, and we wanted clarity and consistency in coverage." The room's audio includes a pair of Community VERIS 28 dual 8-inch systems at left and right of the altar, with another three VERIS 8 single 8-inch loudspeakers along each side. Yamaha 3500 and 5000 amplifiers power the system. "The church has a full praise band, with drummer, bass, keyboard, organ, a couple of violins and flute, and musicality was an important consideration," says Harper. "We had been looking into the VERIS systems, and it seemed like a perfect fit." System drive and processing is covered by Community's dSPEC networked loudspeaker processor. "The dSPEC is a great piece of gear," says Harper. "We're hardly pushing the amps - that's the beauty of it. We use the dSPEC to calibrate the limiters on the amps for maximum efficiency with the loudspeakers. And it's very user friendly. I plugged it in, had no training on it, and had it sorted out in less than an hour." Space to the left and right of the altar have been converted into naves, each of which is served by a pair of MX10 compact monitors as wedges. "We custom-painted them to match the wall, and mounted them where the wall meets ceiling," says Harper. "They look fantastic and they sound great." A Yamaha MG16 console is installed at the sanctuary's mix position, with a Yamaha MG24 for the choir monitors. Sennheiser mics and wireless systems cover the choir loft, altar and musicians. A Sony PTZ70 camera captures the service and sends the signal via Ethernet to the event center. Over in the event center, another Yamaha MG16 console covers mix position. Connected pairs between each of the three consoles enables each to receive aux send audio feeds from the others. As Harper observes, "the system is not quite foolproof, but fortunately the church's technical personnel are savvy enough not to route things into a feedback loop." A smaller 5.1 consumer system covers most of the room's audio needs, and an Eiki LCWB42NA projector gets the Sony PTZ's video feed to a ceiling-mounted DaLite screen. As Harper points out, the event center was conceived from the outset as a multi-use venue, with flexibility a key requirement. "We installed audio I/O panels throughout the room, and they can easily configure the system for whatever event they're holding. They can take the audio and video feed from the sanctuary, or they can host a power point demonstration, or watch a movie, or Monday night football," he says. "It also made it easy to configure a portable church while the main sanctuary was under construction." While A/V interconnectivity is more often the province of contemporary churches, Harper says the implementation of it in this older, more traditional setting was worth it. "There were certainly some challenges in terms of running cable and working out logistics, but the end result is exactly what we wanted."

MIDAS PRO2 brings Heavenly sound to ski slopes

2024-12-11 06:53:26| World Wide Pro Audio Directory

Moon Lighting & Sound is a full service provider of audio, video and lighting, located in the Reno/Lake Tahoe area of Nevada. We have a long history of providing sound for major musical events in our region, as well as taking on the challenge of doing events in some pretty eclectic locations, says owner and president Ken Van Gelder. And since last Christmas, weve been able to upgrade our capability in that area with the addition of the HYPERLINK "http://www.midasconsoles.com/pro2_intro.php" MIDAS PRO2 mixing consoles and the MIDAS Mixtender iPad app. Its so compact and easy to set up that we have literally done full music events on the side of a ski mountain at 10,000 feet while maintaining the MIDAS Pro feature set. Northern Nevada is well known as an area that takes advantage of its geographical diversity, and Moon Lighting & Sound takes pride in delivering superb sound in any environment. We might find ourselves anywhere from a beach on Lake Tahoe to the side of a ski mountain, notes Van Gelder. Our job is to produce the same great sound that you would expect at a traditional venue, and to do it seamlessly, even if the gear needs to go by helicopter. The PRO2 has expanded our ability to deliver just that. For a string of events at the Heavenly Ski Resort over several months, Moon Lighting & Sound used the new MIDAS PRO2. The venue itself was basically an open area at the base of the upper-level ski runs. Folks would come down from the upper elevations and congregate on this mid-mountain area, which was set up for food, drink and entertainment, recounts Van Gelder. We distributed sound across the whole area, 270 degrees around. With the PRO2 in place, this normally difficult assignment became almost routine. We had bands that played the venue more than once. When they would return, we would recall their previous settings, getting sound checks down to around five minutes, Van Gelder says. But what really made it fun was using the MIDAS Mixtender iPad app. While its really designed for dialing in and controlling monitors from the stage, we were using it to mix the house from anywhere on the mountain, and it worked perfectly. Monitor engineer/systems tech Nick Parkey notes that the PRO2 offers advances far beyond its modest size and price. One thing I really like are the new MCA (Mix Control Association) Groups, he notes. They operate similar to VCA groups, but are specific to the selected mix. When the PRO2 is in Advanced navigation mode, and MCA navigation is engaged, the MCA faders control the contributions of their members only to the currently selected mix. Great idea. Parkey also uses the advanced navigation on the PRO2 to hide the faders he doesn't want to see. I really like the collapsed flip to fader mode, he says. It allows me to only see the inputs I have assigned to the selected mixes, which I really appreciate in a monitor setting. It also has a fader flip for the graphic EQ, which is much faster and more accurate than the mouse. Van Gelders exposure to the PRO Series happened when the PRO6 was first introduced. We went to the MIDAS rollout event, and I was taken back at how easy it was to get around on, Ken recalls. But the biggest thing for me was the sound. The warmth and control from the preamps and EQs are spectacular, like nothing else out there in the digital realm. The PRO Series doesnt take on the digital console signature sound we've all put up with far too long; it really just sounds like a nice vintage MIDAS analog desk. Its also very easy to learn and get around on. With most visiting engineers, we can have them up and running as well as comfortable on it in about 10-15 minutes. As a longtime fan of MIDAS analog, Van Gelder sees the new PRO2 as a way to bring uncompromising audio into more and more extreme locations. We already had the PRO6 and PRO9, but even that can be a challenge in some of the locations were asked to stage shows in, he notes. We can take the PRO2 literally anywhere we can produce power, and still have that MIDAS quality. While the PRO2 is a perfect fit for the ad hoc venues that Moon Lighting & Sound is usually working in, Ken Van Gelder sees it as a big advantage for his entire operation. A great majority of the clients we work with are very discerning and have always been about sound quality. We relied on the Heritage and XL desks for years and now have the ability to bring that quality and warmth along with the feature set of the digital PRO series to them in a much smaller package. We now welcome the news of a new eclectic show location, regardless of the imagination of client. # # # # # ENDS [about 826 words] All brands and trademarks are recognised.
