19 August 2019Jessica BrownFeatures correspondentGetty ImagesSoy's isoflavones have oestrogenic properties and have been blamed for raising the risk of breast cancer (as well as prostate cancer for men). But is this really the case?Consumed in many traditional Asian populations for millennia, soya has only been a common part of the Western diet for around 60 years. Now, many of our supermarkets are full of soy milk alternatives, soy burgers and other soya-based meat replacements not to mention traditional soy-based products like tofu, tempeh, soya milk, miso and soya sauce. In the meantime, soya has been linked to a lower risk of heart disease compared to other diets. Overview Soy (Glycine max) comes from soybeans. The beans are a legume that come from China. They can be processed into soy protein, soy milk, or soy fiber. Soy contains isoflavones which are changed in the body to phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogen molecules are similar in chemical structure to the hormone estrogen. In some cases, these phytoestrogens can mimic the effects of estrogen. In other cases, these phytoestrogens can block the effects of estrogen. Soy is used for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, symptoms of menopause, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). It is also used for many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support many of these uses.Uses & Effectiveness Possibly Effective for Breast cancer. Eating large amounts of soy might help prevent breast cancer or breast cancer recurrence in some people. But taking soy supplements doesn't seem to help. Long-term kidney disease (chronic kidney disease or CKD). Taking soy protein by...

Last Updated on March 12, 2018 by Marc SewardWhat are Isoflavones? You may well have heard that soy has specific health benefits because it is particularly high in a class of phytochemical known as isoflavones. While isoflavones are present in various legumes, soybeans have by far the most concentrated amounts of these potent compounds. Soy actually contains a number of isoflavones but the ones that appear to be most beneficial are isoflavones called genistein and daidzein.Estrogen-like EffectsIsoflavones are also a phytoestogen or a plant-based hormone that mimics the effects of human estrogen. Because of their ability to mimic the effects of human estrogen, isoflavones may provide a variety of health benefits and help people avoid disease. On the other hand, their ability to mimic estrogen has caused concern about the effects of soy protein and soy products on men. Many men now shy away from soy because of the potential side effects of isoflavones on men.Benefits of IsoflavonesThere i...
