Assams livestock production on the rise, yet self-sufficiency remains a challenge

Staff reporterGuwahati: Assam has made significant strides in boosting its milk, egg, and meat production in the 2023-24 fiscal year, marking an upward trajectory compared to the previous year. However, despite these gains, the state still faces challenges in achieving full self-sufficiency in its livestock production, as local demand continues to outpace supply.In the year 2023-24, Assams milk production surged to 1,149.7 million litres, up from 1,069.4 million litres in 2022-23. Egg production also saw an increase, with the state producing 623 million eggs in 2023-24, compared to 559 million the previous year. Similarly, meat production rose significantly from 57.78 metric tonnes in 2022-23 to 68.80 metric tonnes in 2023-24.Despite these positive trends, experts and officials acknowledge that the pace of growth is still insufficient to fully meet the rising demand for these products.
