Barcelona to ramp up tourist crackdown with new rules on bad behaviour

MADRID Barcelona is planning to crack down on bad behaviour by tourists after people were caught defecating in the street and vandalising public property.Barcelona city council is considering ways to make it easier to fine those who break its rules on antisocial behaviour.In many cases, offending tourists give authorities the name of their hotels rather than their home addresses, so the fine is never paid once they go home.The most common offences include drinking in the street and disturbing residents nearby, defecating in public, and the unauthorised street vending of food and drink.Other antisocial activity includes spraying graffiti on public spaces or equipment and littering.In 2024, the authorities issued 37,589 fines for the unauthorised consumption of alcohol in public places which disturbed the neighbourhood.In 2024, there were 70,274 offences which should have brought 16.9m (14.6m) in fines for the council.However, since many offenders did not pay, or received a discount...
