CPS chief Pedro Martinez tapped to be Massachusetts education commissioner

Outgoing Chicago Public Schools chief Pedro Martinez was tapped to become the next commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education after board members voted in his favor at a public meeting Tuesday.The new commissioner will work with the board and the Massachusetts Secretary of Education to oversee the states public Pre-K-12 education system, which includes more than 915,000 students enrolled in more than 1,800 schools spread across nearly 400 school districts, according to its website. The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has a $6 billion annual budget but spends $16 billion annually, bolstered by local, state and federal funds.
