NSW public hospitals could be reduced to "skeleton" staffing next week if thousands of doctors take part in a three-day strike to protest against unsustainable workloads and chronic understaffing.Australian Salaried Medical Officers Federation (ASMOF) NSW Branch executive director Andrew Holland said thousands of doctors would stop work from April 8.Mr Holland said the state government had walked away from pay negotiations, leaving employees with no choice but to take action."The decision is a last resort and it is as a result of the failure of the NSW government to address the critical issues impacting the delivery of safe healthcare in NSW," Mr Holland said.Chronic understaffing in the hospital system had forced doctors to work on some occasions up to 16-hour shifts, compromising patient and staff safety, Mr Holland said.Mr Holland said doctors were exhausted and burnt out, causing some to the leave the system and move interstate."I was told yesterday of a member who is working in th...
